Testing the LiFePo4 Change Controller

2026-03-30

Got the LiFePo4 5V, 1A "MPPT" charge controllers from AliExpress. These things are clearly not MPPT, but they seem to work acceptably well. The controller will drop out at about 4.4V, but as long as the voltage stays above that, it will charge even if the solar panel drops down to less then 50mA. It stops cleanly when the battery voltage reaches 3.6V and neither of the two LEDs stay on unless they're powered from the solar panel. Charging at the full 1A did heat it up to just above 70°C though, but I don't think the solar panels I have in mind will ever deliver anything close to 1A!
